September 2024

Tukimi

Every September, the country comes alive with celebrations and customs that honor the moon, complete with special foods, rituals, and tales passed down through generations.

In Japan, each month has a traditional nickname in addition to the standard "January," "February," and so on. These nicknames often derive from the characteristics or events associated with that month. September, for example, is called "長月" (Nagatsuki), which translates to "Long Month." The name is believed to originate from the longer nights during this time of year as autumn begins to set in, and the days grow shorter. In this month, the best time for moon viewing is often referred to as the "Fifteenth Night" (十五夜). On this day, people traditionally gather to appreciate the full moon and give thanks for the blessings of nature. It's also a time for family celebrations and other festive activities.

Yasaka Shrine holding Gion Festival is an ancient shrine in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto as the main deity. The shrine is known throughout the country as a place of good fortune to ward off bad luck and epidemics. There are many historical buildings on the shrine grounds, with the beautiful garden and stone-paved approach in particular attracting visitors. In addition, the main gate, Nanro-mon (South Tower Gate), is particularly spectacular. During the Gion Festival, various events take place in Yasaka Shrine. The three main events are known as Mikoshi events. The mikoshi is a decorated sacred vehicle used to carry the gods during Japanese festivals. Because it is made of wood, it is very heavy and most mikoshi can only be lifted by more than 100 people. The mikoshi of Hachiman Shrine weighs approximately 600 kg and is carried by around 250 people. After the mikoshi is carried through the city of Kyoto, a ceremony is held to return the mikoshi to the shrine. These events are the Gion Festival’s climax and attract many worshippers and tourists.
